Watsonia vanderspuyae SEEDS

Watsonia vanderspuyae seeds grow into van der Spuy’s bugle lily a cormous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Described by Harriet Bolus (L.Bolus, 18771970, outstanding South African botanist). Named after Hester van der Spuy (18911984), South African garden writer and horticulturist who popularised Cape indigenous plants in cultivation and wrote extensively on South African garden plants. Produces vivid flowers on tall scapes in the typical Watsonia style. All Watsonia are cormous geophytes, growing from corms and bearing fan-arranged sword-like leaves. Family Iridaceae, subfamily Crocoideae.

Full sun; well-drained soils; warm subtropical Cape conditions; dry dormancy. Eastern Cape endemic Watsonia.

Watsonia vanderspuyae honours Hester van der Spuy the South African garden writer who did much to popularise Cape indigenous plants in cultivation, an Eastern Cape endemic bugle lily described by Harriet Bolus in one of the many collaborations between Cape botanists and Cape horticulturalists that have defined the documentation of the extraordinary South African Iridaceae flora.
