This tender perennial herb comes from South American, where Stevia leaves have traditionally been used by the Guarani people of Paraguay as a natural sweetener for yerba tea as well as for a range of other folk medicine remedies. The chemicals in the leaves are now used commercially to make noncaloric sweeteners.

With its fresh green serrated leaves and clusters of tiny white flowers in summer, Stevia makes a charming foliage plant for a border or herb garden, and also grows well in a container in a warm sunny spot.
