Scilla hyacinthoides seeds grow into the hyacinth squill a large bulbous geophyte native to the subtropical biome from southern Europe east to northern Iraq, with a distribution spanning the Mediterranean basin, Turkey and the Levant. Described by Linnaeus (1753). The epithet hyacinthoides means ‘resembling a Hyacinthus’, referring to the hyacinth-like appearance of the dense raceme of blue-violet flowers. Among the largest-growing wild Scilla species produces very large bulbs and tall erect scapes bearing dense racemes of numerous small blue-violet, star-shaped flowers in spring. The genus Scilla is named from a classical Greek name for a coastal bulbous plant. Genus range: Europe, Mediterranean to Iran, Tropical Africa; Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae.
Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soils; warm subtropical to cool temperate Mediterranean conditions; dry summer dormancy.
