Potato Dwarf Prickly Pear

This surprisingly cute cactus grows wild in the western US where it has adapted to tolerate both cold temperatures and drought with ease. In the garden, Potato Dwarf Prickly Pear Cactus remains a compact and easygoing cactus that makes low-growing mats of glossy pads that adorn their tops in June with bright, acid-yellow flowers adored by bees. Compared to other prickly pear cacti, this variety is smaller, less spiny, and especially good in pots. Potato Cactus makes a great addition to dry rock gardens, crevice gardens, dry perennial beds, and smaller gardens as well as well-drained patio containers where its small and spineless form makes it a more pleasant companion for people using the space. A superb form to contrast against small grasses, small yuccas, or other ground-covering plants thanks to its unique shape. Very low-maintenance.
