Lycoris rosea seeds grow into the pink spider lily a bulbous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of China and Japan, producing elegant umbels of soft rose-pink to pale carmine flowers with the characteristic long, wavy reflexed petals and protruding stamens typical of the genus. Described by Traub & Moldenke. One of the more delicate-coloured Lycoris, the rose-pink flower colour distinct from the vivid scarlet of L. radiata and the golden yellow of L. aurea. Like most Lycoris species, the flowers appear before the leaves the bulb sends up the flower scape from bare ground in summer or early autumn, with the leaves appearing only after flowering. All parts contain toxic Amaryllidaceae alkaloids including galantamine. The genus Lycoris was named by Herbert (William Herbert, 17781847) after Lycoris, a celebrated figure in Roman antiquity.
