Fremont’s Mahonia

6-10′ x 6-8′ wide. Mahonia fremontii is one of our very best native shrubs, growing naturally across much of the Southwestern US. This large-growing Desert Holly has year-round landscape interest with profuse, yellow, fragrant spring flowers, large bright red summer fruits and showy blue evergreen foliage. The shrub is rarely offered because it’s slow to get to saleable size. But in the ground it gets big and lives for many years. The spiny leaves make it a great barrier plant for hedges and windbreaks.
