Caragana microphylla seeds grow into the small-leaved peashrub a spreading, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub native to the temperate biome of eastern Siberia, northern and north-eastern China, Mongolia and adjacent regions. Described by Lam. (Jean-Baptiste Lamarck). The epithet microphylla means ‘small-leaved’ (from Greek), referring to the small, compound leaves with numerous tiny leaflets that give this species a fine, feathery texture unlike the broader-leaved larger Caragana relatives. Produces bright yellow pea flowers in late spring. Very hardy and drought-tolerant; extensively used in windbreaks, shelterbelts and erosion control programmes across the steppes and semi-arid zones of Inner Asia. Nitrogen-fixing. Family Fabaceae.
Full sun; adaptable to poor, sandy and dry soils; extremely cold-hardy; drought-tolerant. Excellent for windbreaks and sand stabilisation.
Caragana microphylla the small-leaved peashrub brings a fine, feathery texture to the range of Caragana shrubs, its delicate compound foliage and yellow spring flowers combined with extraordinary cold and drought hardiness making it one of the most useful shrubs for windbreak planting and sand stabilisation across the cold continental steppes of Inner Asia.
