Callicarpa bodinieri seeds grow into Bodinier’s beautyberry a deciduous shrub native to the subtropical biome of central and southern China, including Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong and Guangxi. Described by H.Lveill. The epithet bodinieri honours mile Marie Bodinier (18421901), the French missionary-botanist who collected plant specimens across central and southern China in the late 19th century. The best-known selection is var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ (RHS AGM), but all seed-grown plants are ornamentally valuable. The outstanding ornamental display is produced in autumn: dense, rounded, iridescent violet-purple berries are produced in clusters along the arching branches after the leaves fall, creating one of the most dramatic berry displays of any hardy shrub. Full sun to partial shade; adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils; hardy to 15C or below. Excellent for autumn berry display in temperate gardens.
