Brunfelsia latifolia seeds grow into the broad-leaved yesterday, today and tomorrow an evergreen shrub native to the wet tropical biome of the Caribbean (West Indies) and adjacent areas of Central America. Described by (Pohl) Benth. The epithet latifolia means ‘broad-leaved’ (from Latin). One of several Brunfelsia species called ‘yesterday, today and tomorrow’ for the remarkable three-day colour sequence of the flowers: they open deep violet-purple, fade to pale lavender on day two, and reach pure white on day three, with all three colours often present simultaneously on one plant. Fragrant. Like all Brunfelsia, all parts contain toxic alkaloids including scopoletin and brunfelsamidine do not ingest. Family Solanaceae.
Full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained fertile soils; warm tropical to subtropical conditions. Excellent ornamental evergreen for tropical and subtropical gardens. ALL PARTS TOXIC.
Brunfelsia latifolia the broad-leaved yesterday, today and tomorrow produces one of the most dramatic multi-colour floral sequences in the garden, with three differently coloured generations of flowers present on the plant simultaneously: the deep violet new flowers, the lavender fading flowers and the white spent flowers, creating an extraordinarily rich mosaic of colour from a single shrub.
