Anthurium besseae aff. ‘Dark Velvet’

Anthurium besseae aff. ‘Dark Velvet’ is a striking plant known for its deep, velvety foliage that makes it a standout in any collection. The leaves are a dark, almost black-green, with a rich velvety texture that reflects light in a way that creates a shimmering effect. This variety is a close visual relative of Anthurium besseae and is sometimes referred to as an “affinis” (aff.), indicating a close but not identical resemblance to the typical species.

Native to: This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Ecuador. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte or in the humid, shaded understory of forests, where it enjoys high humidity and indirect light.

Water: Anthurium besseae aff. ‘Dark Velvet’ requires consistently moist but well-drained soil. Its important to avoid letting the soil become waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot. During the growing season, water regularly, but reduce watering slightly in the cooler months when the plants growth slows down.

Light: This Anthurium thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the velvety leaves, causing them to lose their distinctive texture and colour. A spot near a north or east-facing window is ideal.

Humidity: High humidity is crucial for this plant, with levels of 70% or more being ideal. This makes it a good candidate for growing in a terrarium or placing in a bathroom. Regular misting and using a humidifier can help maintain the necessary humidity levels.

Temperature: The plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18C and 25C. It should be kept away from cold drafts and temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant and affect its growth.
