Alsike Clover can reach a height of 2-4 feet and tends to recline unless planted with companion plants to hold it upright. This clover doesnt have the crescent-shaped marks on the leaves that red clover has. This clover can cause bloating and should be fed to livestock with care.
Alsike Clover is adapted to a wide range of soils, and grows well in the northern USA and at higher elevations. This clover can survive severe winters, and preforms best where the summers are cool. It tolerates wet soil, prefers full sun, and is not shade tolerant.

This clover can be spread at a rate of 5-8lbs per acre when mixed with companion grasses or 8-12lbs per acre when seeded alone. The seed needs to be sowed at a depth of 1/8 inch and should be planted in the springtime. Only plant this seed in the fall when it can be irrigated and when there is at least six weeks of growing season left before frost. This timing will ensure that establishment of the clover.
Planting and Establishment
Seeding depth should be 1/8 inch. Typically, in grass/legume mixture, the grass is drill seeded in rows and the Alsike Clover is over-seeded to limit competition from grass and weeds. Proper time to seed is determine by seasonal moisture conditions. Most areas this grows April-May. Late Summer and Fall planting must occur when there is plenty of moisture or irrigation. If planting in the Fall, be sure there is 6 weeks of growing season before first frost.
