Apios americana A beautiful and fascinating native vine found throughout the deciduous forests of the eastern United States, from southern Canada to Florida and west to Colorado. This vigorous, twining perennial can reach up to 18 feet long, forming lush foliage ideal for natural screens, trellises, and fences. In mid to late summer, it produces fragrant clusters of dusty reddish-brown to deep mauve, pea-like flowers followed by long decorative podsadding both charm and seasonal interest to the garden while drawing in pollinators. Highly valued for its ornamental and ecological benefits, Apios americana enriches the soil through nitrogen fixation and provides lasting beauty. Hardy in zones 310.
Though the plants underground tubers were historically eaten by Indigenous peoples and early settlers, we do not recommend them for casual consumption, as they may cause gastrointestinal discomfort if improperly prepared.
