Product Information

Wiregrass is a 3 to 5 ft.-tall native warm-season perennial. Wiregrass is a warm-season grass flowering in late spring with a slender seed bearing panicle. Seeds have three spreading awns. It grows on well-drained sandy types of soil and full sun or part shade sites. The essential value of Wiregrass is as base fuel for a fire-dependent ecosystem and the habitat it provides for wildlife such as bobwhite quail and the endangered gopher turtles. We purposely left approx 8% of the native wildflowers in the wiregrass for quail food. Wiregrassgrows best in full sun to partial shade.

Please note during the harvesting process we choose to keep the Wiregrass as “bulk material.” This means the materials have not been de-awned, de-bearded or conditioned. This is the best and most natural type of seed to plant for field and restoration plantings. So do not be surprised to see some pieces and stems mixed in with the seeds on this variety, but know that we thrash, scalp, and sift this once harvested to get it as fluid as possible. It will easily pass through a grasslander drill, or can be blown on with a straw blower.

Plant between March and August, after the last chance of frost, at a rate of 20 lbs. per acre. Plant at a depth of 1/4 in. Wiregrass grows best in soil that has a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
