Aeschynanthus japhrolepis

Thick leaves, bright flowers, and a trailing habit that does the work for you. Aeschynanthus japhrolepis is a lesser-known species in the lipstick plant family, with dense, fleshy, dark green foliage arranged along cascading stems. The leaves are thicker and more succulent than most Aeschynanthus, giving the plant a robust, full look even before it flowers. In the right conditions it produces clusters of tubular, vivid red-orange flowers that emerge from dark calyces.

Origins
Aeschynanthus japhrolepis is native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte on mossy branches and tree trunks in warm, sheltered conditions.

Soil and Substrate
As an epiphyte, it needs a light, free-draining substrate. Our Simply Houseplant Tropical Potting Mix works well, amended with extra orchid bark and perlite for increased aeration. Water when the top layer of substrate is dry. Bright, indirect light encourages flowering.
