Moth Orchids, aka Phalaenopsis, naturally cycle between blooming and non-blooming periods. Blooms last for 24 months, and the plants themselves can live 10-15 years.
Most orchids for-sale are on their first blooming cycle. While many are thrown out once those flowers fade, as Orchids age they produce bigger and more spectacular blooms.
Plant Orchids in a well-draining, airy mix like orchid bark or sphagnum moss (never soil, which causes rot). Water with room-temperature water (not ice cubes: this is a common misconception, as colder temperatures shock the roots). Provide bright, indirect light (some direct sun is okay) and fertilize regularly when not in bloom using an orchid-specific formula. Use a clear pot with drainage to monitor root coloursilvery roots mean its time to water. Repot only when not flowering to prevent shock. After flowering, allow the flower spike to turn fully yellow before pruning it so the plant can reabsorb nutrients.
