Gerrardanthus macrorrhizus seeds grow into one of the most spectacular caudiciform climbers in the gourd family a deciduous vine native to the seasonally dry subtropical biome of KwaZulu-Natal and surrounding southern Africa, producing a massive, exposed, globose caudex that can reach 6090 cm in diameter on old plants and gives the species its popular name ‘bigfoot’. The name macrorrhizus means ‘large root’. From this enormous, smooth, brownish-green caudex emerge vigorous annual climbing stems with ivy-like, broadly lobed leaves, tendrils for support, and small yellow flowers the plants are dioecious (separate male and female individuals needed for seed production). Family Cucurbitaceae.
Gerrardanthus macrorrhizus is one of the fastest-developing and most rewarding caudiciform vines in cultivation, with the caudex growing quickly above ground to show its impressive globose form. Warm conditions, sharp drainage and semi-shade to full sun suit it best; the vine is seasonal and deciduous in the cool months, when the caudex is displayed most dramatically.
Gerrardanthus macrorrhizus is the most rewarding caudiciform in the entire gourd family fast-growing, spectacular, and quickly developing the enormous exposed globe of the caudex that makes this one of the most dramatic and collectible climbing plants from southern Africa.
